About

Tritone Jazz Fantasy Camps (www.tritonejazz.com) are week-long, summertime immersions in jazz for adult (over 21) players and singers of all levels. We emphasize personal instruction, with a faculty-to-camper ratio that never exceeds 5:1. Started in 1998, Tritone camps put amateur players in the capable hands of professional jazz musician/educators for a week of learning and fun.

  1. I had played drums and drumset in high school and junior college until age 21, then had to get serious about earning a living. The radio and stereo were my only music outlet until after retirement and at age 57, I found a used vibraphone and started taking lessons. If you are interested why the vibes, send me a note. I had heard about jazz camps and had wanted to attend. One close to me at the University of Colorado at Boulder (which exists no longer) was available, but they required an audition. Not for me. Too insecure. When I heard about Tritone and the fact no auditions were required, I felt this was my chance to get involved. 2008 will be my 4th summer. Not a long time compared to many, but I wouldn’t miss it. Not only have I gained musically, I have found a new family. Believe it! Give it a try! By the way, I am not being paid for this. ENJOY!

Is there any group like yours in Los Angeles ca area?

      • tritonejazz says:

Chris, check out Jazz Camp West (www.jazzcampwest.com). I know they’re in CA; not sure how close to LA. There’s also the Stanford Jazz Camp. Sure, they’re competitors of ours, but we’re always happy to help jazzers find a place to learn and play and to help our colleagues with their programs if it makes sense to do so.

great, your story sounds so familiar. I played trombone in highschool and gave it up to pursue a career. Now, I’m 52 and decided to learn a bass instrument and taught myself bass guitar. Unfortunately, not much avail in Topeka Kansas but this sounds interesting.

Can I get on the email list or what should I do?

    • tritonejazz says:

Hi Karl–I’d be happy to put you on our e-mail list, and at a Tritone camp you would find yourself in very good company, with campers like you and a knowledgeable faculty than can help. It looks as if our 2010 Wisconsin camp will be July 11-16. I’ll let you know the dates of our Rochester camp by the end of the week. This year’s is going on right now. Thanks.

I love jazz. And ever since college when I heard the wonderous sonic architechture of African saxophonist Tubee Ornot I wanted to play just like him. I even gave up the electric triangle and the Eflat Gamelon zirbufu to play the sax just like my idol – my teacher really. My music is about expressing all the beautiful human emotions from angst to zenophobia. From bombast to yellin’ like a motherf*#*#er. I would love to come to Tritone this year. I hope your big band charts are written for C melody sax. If not, could Fred Sturm re-write the lead alto parts for me? Thanks.

    Best vibes and peace,

    Lovell “TC” Hatcher

This sounds great. Any camps in the New York City area? Thanks.

    • tritonejazz says:

Not in the city, Ed, but only about 7 hours away by car–Nazareth College in Rochester. We often get NYC players at that camp. Thanks for asking.

  6. Don Levine says:

After attending Tritone in Wisc. for several years I am addicted to playing as much small group jazz as possible. This is coming from a big band guy. If there are campers who would like to join follow camper, Tenor Sax Mike and myself for great jam sessions and a whole lot of laughter, come join us- we’d love to have you. We do it in Rockville Centre, Long Island at least once a month.
