We’ve always considered National Public Radio a national treasure. But its Web site is also a wonderful place for jazz, featuring free, live, online concerts (which are also archived), often from the Village Vanguard, as well as great stories in both print and audio form about jazz artists. The latest is a live concert from last week featuring trumpeter Tom Harrell’s quintet.
Just go to www.npr.org and click on Music in the left-hand column. You can also sign up for their jazz newsletter, which keeps you informed about upcoming concerts.
Once you’ve seen what’s available on NPR.org, remember that it’s largely supported by public radio stations who purchase the network’s programs. Please support your local station if you can.
Thanks.

Yeah, I’m listening to the Vanguard performance as I write. Tom Harrell – nice.
Besides NPR, another cool thing: slacker.com interactive “radio”. Not only do they have a couple decent jazz “stations”, you can design your own too! The basic radio is free but you can pay a fee and upgrade – though the basic package is really all you need. Pretty hip stuff I must say.
News: From the “Say It Ain’t So Joe Dept.”, after four great seasons of jazz music in Princeton Wisconsin the Fox Note has suspended it’s programming until a new venue can be located. Yeah, I know – bummer. Until we sell the building – and to keep our liquor license active – we will occasionally be hosting music when we can as will be the case on Memorial Day weekend May 23 when Glenn Broadhead will bring some of his great small band charts for a bunch of us to wail on. Bon temps.
Even more news: Rumor has it that several Matrix CDs will be re-issued soon. This is huge. John Harmon should know the exact details on this.
See you all this summer.
